[...] That’s why public libraries are concerned. To give you an idea of how large of an impact this is– our collections budget was $1,135,664 in 2009, according to the statistics from Colorado’s Library Research Service. Throughout the state of Colorado for 2009, materials budgets ranged from $4,577,200 for the Denver Public Library system to a mere $232 for one small rural library.
Thanks for the motivation, Jason! With all of us pulling together across the field-- academic, public, etc. I think there's a lot we can do. And will do.

Awesome, Matt. I just wanted to stop by and say that this sort of thing is _exactly_ why I posted what I did. Obviously I'm not interested in undermining the library side of this discussion...and I'm well and aware that my small academic library is not at all representative of the larger library world. That's why I took such pains to point it out. :-)

I posted because I wanted to see the numbers from libraries like yours, and like Laura's. Before my post, I hadn't seen anyone putting numbers on this stuff, and I think it's really important for librarians to see the potential damage being done.

So....thanks for that. :-)

I think it's great that libraries are getting involved in the boycott and voicing their opinions on this. It is so ridiculous for HarperCollins (and other publishers) to treat digital so much more different than physical, all I can see is that they are scared of change. Thanks for the insightful post!

Looks like Laura Crossett has posted the numbers for her public library as well.... concluded that almost a third of her collection would be affected:

I know of the Project Gutenberg books available via OverDrive, but where else can I begin to collect (and how do I distribute) non-DRM econtent?

I agree with you, Sarah-- and I'll certainly advocate for my own place of employment to make this choice as well. I just don't see it likely to fly with the emphasis on customer service we have. While it's a valid argument to say, "We don't want to offer our community members an inferior product", it's also a valid argument to say, "it's not up to us to decide for the community-- if they want these inferior products, we have an obligation to provide them and do our best as library staff to lower the barriers to access." Now, I don't agree with the second argument because I think it chooses the short term payoff at the expense of the longer term, but I do think it's got enough momentum in the library world that it will keep us vulnerable to being picked off without some more centralized lobbying effort.

That's why I really hope that Library Renewal can pull off what they hope to and can help us change the game.
