LI846: Designing a Network

This project presented the opportunity to learn more about an aspect of technology that had always fascinated me, the "nuts and bolts" of digital service provision. Without a robust network, a library cannot fulfill one of its most important missions: the provision of Internet access and other electronic resources. For this class, we were told to create a hypothetical library scenario, but I decided to choose a real library in need of upgrades to its technological infrastructure and create a network plan that could be implemented. This was truly a learning experience for me as well, as I had to make choices that went against my philosophical leanings towards open source software when it was more appropriate for the library's needs to choose proprietary products. The theoretical background gained from the SLIM program guided my choices when I found myself in uncharted territory.
